Comparing PVC and Wood Decking

Let’s compare PVC and wood decking to see which will be better for your home.

A deck is the perfect feature to add to your home. Not only do they look great, but they make your outdoor space more usable and enjoyable. This doesn’t even take into consideration the monetary value that your home stands to gain. If you’re getting a deck installed, though, you’ll need to decide on the material that will be used to create it. Among the different options you have, there are two choices we want to go over: PVC vs wood. Let’s compare PVC and wood decking to see which will be better for your home.

Wood Decking

Wood is a timeless classic for decks, as it offers a beautiful and natural aesthetic that many people love, complete with all of the customizability you could want. When wood gets pressure treated, it can withstand all sorts of damage, such as denting and scratching, as well as weather damage. Wood decking is also a great option for homeowners who want to build their decks on a budget, making wooden decks more accessible than other alternatives.

You do have to stay on top of maintenance requirements, though,  as wood decking is susceptible to water damage if you don’t power wash it and apply sealant on a semi-annual basis. There is also the concern with splinters, as wooden boards can dry out and cause splinters to form. As long as you stay on top of these concerns, however, wooden decks can provide years of enjoyment to you.

PVC Decking

If you’re looking for decking that doesn’t have as many maintenance requirements, then PVC decking could be the choice for you. All you need to do is spray it by using a garden hose or sweep it with a broom, and you’re good to go. This is also another decking choice that comes with many stylistic options, giving you the ability to create a deck that works with your fashion preferences.

You do need to worry about damage from the UV rays of the sun, however, as this can cause your deck to become discolored and faded. These decks can also be a little pricier to fix. These issues are by no means deal breakers, but they are worth your consideration before you commit to a certain type of deck for your yard.
